Australia, US team up on medical research

Researchers in Australia and the United States will increase collaboration on projects to cure brain disorders.

Australian and US researchers are about to team up to find cures for conditions such as Alzheimer's and autism.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and President Barack Obama agreed to deepen cooperation on medical research during bilateral talks at the White House on Tuesday (US time).

Australian researchers will participate in the US Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative, which Mr Obama launched.

The enterprise aims to develop new ways to treat and prevent and cure brain disorders like Alzheimer's disease, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury.

The US National Institutes of Health already funds Australian researchers in the fields of malaria, cancer, HIV and mental health.
