The southern African nation of Zimbabwe will vote on a new constitution today.
If approved by voters, the contitution will for the first time, put a definite end date on President Robert Mugabe's rule.
The new laws would decentralise power and limit Mr Mugabe's future reign - and any subsequent presidents - to two five-year terms in office.
It's hoped the referendum will pave the way for democratic elections being held later in the year.
The Australian government has welcomed the vote and as a result began easing long-standing sanctions against Zimbabwe.
Foreign Minister Bob Carr has told Santilla Chingaipe, the move is part of the planned phased roll back of sanctions pledged by the Federal Government.
