Passengers at Australian domestic airports can expect to undergo full-body X-ray scans under a dramatic overhaul to security set to be announced next week.

Fairfax Media reports on Saturday that the Coalition government will allocate money to regional airports to alleviate the cost of the upgrades.

Restrictions to liquids, aerosols and other carry-on items may also be part of the overhaul, bringing domestic travel in line with many international flights.

Last year, police thwarted a terror plot targeting Sydney airport, after two men allegedly tried to smuggle an explosive device hidden in a meat grinder onto a flight.
