The head of Australia's new border protection agency will be sworn in at a ceremony on Wednesday.
Former ACT chief police officer Roman Quaedvlieg will become the first commissioner of the Australian Border Force.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Immigration Minister Peter Dutton are expected to attend the event in Canberra which will inaugurate the ABF.
From July 1, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service will be merged into a single Department of Immigration and Border Protection.
The Australian Border Force will be set up within the new department.
It draws together the operational border, investigations, compliance, detention and enforcement functions of the two existing agencies.
Policy and administration will remain within the new department.
