Australian defence talks in China underway

Annual talks between Australia and China's top brass of defence have gotten underway in Beijing.

An Australian Defence delegation has held annual talks with China, covering co-operation in the region and the importance of stability in the South China Sea.

Defence Secretary Dennis Richardson and Defence boss and Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin led the group attending the 19th Australia-China defence strategic dialogue in Beijing on Wednesday.

They met with Chinese officials including Chief of the Joint Staff General Fang Fenghui.

Australia is committed to working with China to ensure a strong, stable and prosperous region, Defence says.

During the discussions, Mr Richardson and Air Chief Marshal Binskin raised the importance of maintaining regional peace and stability including in the South China Sea and on the Korean Peninsula.

"We also highlighted that the Australian Defence Force continues to operate globally and regionally in accordance with international law," Air Chief Marshal Binskin said.
