Australian Felton wins NZ golf in playoff

Australian golfer Jarryd Felton has recovered from a poor tee shot to birdie the 18th and win the NZ PGA Championship on the first hole of a three-way playoff.

West Australian golfer Jarryd Felton has won the New Zealand PGA Championship in a tense playoff against Victorian Josh Younger and New Zealand's Ben Campbell.

Felton, Campbell and Younger all finished at 14-under-par 270 after four rounds of stroke play, forcing a trip to the Manawatu Golf Club's 18th tee for a playoff.

Felton drove wide from the tee but was able to quickly rally and make birdie to seal the win.

"I didn't hit too good of a tee shot - I think I got pretty lucky actually. I capitalised and made the putt. I don't think the Kiwi fans were too happy," Felton said.

"I came into the week not feeling so confident but, the more rounds I played around this course, I started to grow in confidence and to win is a great feeling."

It's Felton's second win on the PGA Tour of Australasia, his first coming in 2015 when he won the NSW PGA Championship in just his fifth start as a professional.

The win gives the 21-year-old full exemption on the Tour for the remainder of 2017 as well as 2018.

Campbell was awarded the Sir Bob Charles trophy for finishing as the leading New Zealander.

"It was a bit disappointing; I hit the ball really well today. I just struggled with the putter all day," Campbell said.

Overnight leader Anthony Quayle of Queensland crashed out of contention with a final-round two-over 73 to finish 10th.
