Australian production designer Fiona Crombie has continued her march toward a likely Oscar with a major accolade from her peers in Los Angeles.

Crombie, a NIDA graduate who was a resident designer at the Sydney Theatre Company, won the Art Directors' Guild Award for excellence in production design in a period feature film on Saturday for her work on The Favourite.

It is a significant win for Crombie, who is favourite to win the production design Oscar at the February 24 Academy Awards in Hollywood.

"I am so grateful to the ADG for this award, and I am so thrilled to find myself in this room," Crombie said at the ceremony that has a history of predicting Oscar winners.

Crombie won ahead of Aaron Haye for Bohemian Rhapsody, Jess Gonchor for The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Nathan Crowley for First Man and Eugenio Caballero for Roma.

Crombie is also nominated for a BAFTA.

The Favourite is set in early 18th Century Britain and centres on the relationship between two cousins, played by Emma Stone and Rachel Wesiz, competing for Queen Anne's (Olivia Colman) affections.

Crombie's production design Oscar nomination was one of 10 The Favourite received, to tie with the Alfonso Cuaron-directed Spanish language drama Roma for most nominations heading into Oscars.

Her latest project is production design on Australian director David Michod's film, The King, scheduled for release later this year.
