Australian Jock Palfreeman has left Bulgaria more than 13 years after he was first arrested and charged with murder.
Mr Palfreeman on Friday confirmed he has left the Balkan nation and is with family but would not disclose his current whereabouts for safety reasons.
The 34-year-old said he wanted to stay and pay back a debt owed to the family of the Bulgarian man he killed, but was forced to leave due to pressure from a far-right political party.
"It was not by choice," Mr Palfreeman told AAP.
"I wanted to stay ... but they wouldn't allow me. I had to leave very fast or they said they would put me back in prison."
The Sydney man said he remained concerned for his safety after the father of the Bulgarian law student he killed recently made threats against him on local television.
Hristo Monov in June last year condemned the early release of Mr Palfreeman, who served nearly 12 years in jail in Bulgaria for the murder of his son Andrei.
"I just want (Palfreeman) to go back to prison for one more night - they'll be so happy to see him," Mr Monov told reporters at a press conference in Sofia.
The former Bulgarian Socialist Party MP said the early release of Mr Palfreeman in September 2019 was illegal and that the three-judge panel who made the decision were corrupt.
Mr Palfreeman was found guilty of murder and attempted murder for stabbing Andrei Monov and another Bulgarian youth during a street melee in 2007.
He has always maintained he acted in self-defence.
