As Bob Carr begins work as Australia's new Foreign Minister, there's an immediate call for action coming from Egypt.

An Australian journalist facing charges there since last month wants the Minister to publicly jump into his case. Austin Mackell was arrested in February for allegedly bribing children to throw rocks at a police station; he maintains he was working on a feature on the Arab Spring.

Austin Mackell told SBS's Arabic program he wants Carr to be 'publicly outraged' about violations of his rights.

Ron Sutton reports.
