World championships silver medallist Fabrice Lapierre has made a successful start to 2017 by winning the men's long jump at the indoor grand prix meet in Boston.

Lapierre won on countback from Sweden's Michel Tourneus after both recorded a best jump of 7.80m.

The 33-year-old Australian claimed he had "thrown away a gold medal" at last year's Rio Olympics after he failed to qualify for the top eight in the final, having fouled twice in the first three rounds.

Fit-again world and Olympic 100m hurdles champion Sally Pearson will begin her indoor campaign next weekend in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Having fully overcome the hamstring injury which ruled her out of the Rio Games, Pearson decided she would be better served competing on the indoor circuit rather than taking part in the revolutionary Nitro Series in Melbourne.

She flew to Germany on Saturday night.

In other news, Morgan Mitchell produced the standout performance at the Hunter Classic meet in Newcastle.

The Rio Games relay finalist bettered the qualifying mark for the world championships in August by winning the 400m in 51.96 seconds.

"I'm happy to get the qualifier out of the way, obviously," she said.

"My coach thought it would happen, but I just didn't trust it. I have been so underdone in 400m training.

"For 350 metres, I felt amazing and it could have been a PB then, over that last 50, it got me."

Brett Robinson won Sunday's men's selection trial for the world cross-country championships in March in Uganda.

The Olympic 5000m finalist completed the 10km course in Canberra in 29 minutes and 42 seconds.

Anna Kelly won the women's event in 35:07.
