An Australian man who fled the country while waiting to stand trial on kidnapping and torture charges has been arrested in Cambodia.

Guido James Eglitis, 68, formerly of Warrnambool in Victoria, was arrested along with a New Zealand man in the Cambodian city of Siem Reap on Friday.

The pair were taken into custody after a British man told Cambodian police he was attacked in his room, and his passport and camera were taken, on September 29.

Eglitis had been committed to stand trial in Brisbane in 2007 after a magistrate ruled there was enough evidence to potentially convict him of attacking businessman Ronald Sydney Ryton-Benson.

There are outstanding charges of kidnapping, deprivation of liberty, robbery, impersonating an officer and possessing restricted items.

Eglitis' appearance before a Cambodian court could trigger his extradition to Australia.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has been contacted for comment.

Queensland Police said they could not comment on Eglitis' arrest.

A statement and photograph of Eglitis and the 44-year-old New Zealand man Brett Michael Hastie have been posted on the Cambodian police website.
