Australian military milestones in 2016

It's 100 years since the first Battle of the Somme in France, 75 years since HMAS Sydney's sinking off the WA coast and 25 years since the First Gulf War.

SIGNIFICANT MILITARY MILESTONES IN 2016:

* 100 years since the first memorial to mark the Gallipoli landing was built in Australia. The Australasian Soldiers' Dardanelles Cenotaph in Adelaide.

* 100 years since the first Battle of the Somme in France.

* 100 years since the Battle of Fromelles where in July 1916, 5533 Australians were killed or wounded in a day. The nation's worst 24 hours at war.

* 100 years since the first of two plebiscites confirmed the Australian Imperial Force would remain a volunteer-only force.

* 75 years since the siege of Tobruk and the battles of Greece and Crete in World War II.

* 75 years since the sinking of the HMAS Sydney off the West Australian coast.

* 50 years since the battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War.

* 25 years since the First Gulf War.
