Australian Open day 8 must-see match-ups

Must-see matches on day eight of the 2019 Australian Open at Melbourne Park.

MATCHES TO WATCH ON DAY EIGHT OF THE AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

* 4-Naomi Osaka (JAP) v 13-Anastasija Sevastova (LAT) - Rod Laver Arena, Day session

Reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka has the chance to make her first Australian Open quarter-final when she meets Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova in Monday's opening singles match on centre court. The fourth seed survived a giant scare against Hsieh Su-Wei in round four, coming back from a set and 4-1 down. It is second time the pair have played this season - Osaka triumphed 3-6 6-0 6-4 in the Brisbane quarter-finals. Sevastova, 28, retired from tennis in 2013 but returned two years later and hit a career-high world No.11 in 2018.

* 4-Alexander Zverev (GER) v 16-Milos Raonic (CAN) - Rod Laver Arena, Day

It's been an up-and-down tournament for Alexander Zverev. The talented German blitzed Aljaz Bedene and Australian wildcard Alex Bolt in straight sets but that was split by a second-round five-setter against Jeremy Chardy. The task steps up a notch against the Canadian, who is serving up a storm. When he lands his first serve, only a third are returned. Raonic, who is averaging roughly 30 aces a match, has dropped just one set - to Stan Wawrinka in round two.

* 1-Simona Halep (ROU) v 16-Serena Williams (USA) - Rod Laver Arena, Night session

Serena Williams has barely broken a sweat at Melbourne Park, brushing aside Tatjana Maria, Eugenie Bouchard and Dayana Yastremska in straight sets and dropping just nine games in the process. It's been more of a grind for Halep, who was pushed by Kaia Kanepi and youngster Sofia Kenin. She's been on court for three hours and 10 more than Williams but whether that counts for or against her remains to be seen. The Romanian No.1 must overcome a horrid 1-8 head-to-head to record against the all-time great.

* 1-Novak Djokovic (SRB) v 15-Daniil Medvedev (RUS) - Rod Laver Arena, Night

The Serbian No.1 faces his second rising star in two matches in the Russian 22-year-old. Djokovic recovered from a mid-match blip to get past Canadian teenager Denis Shapovalov in four sets. He holds a 2-0 career head-to-head record over Medvedev, who has started the season in great touch. The No.15 seed beat Andy Murray, Milos Raonic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga en route to the final at Brisbane and hasn't dropped a set in Melbourne.
