An Australian man has been deported from India after security officers reportedly uncovered "strong indications" he was a supporter of the self-proclaimed Islamic State group.

Malay-Australian Ahmad Fahim Bin Hamad Awang was detained at New Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport after arriving on a flight from Perth on Thursday night, The Indian Express has reported.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says it is aware an Australian man has been deported from the country.

Security officers, acting on a tip-off, discovered IS propaganda on his laptop as well as photos of him posing with firearms, the publication said.

Pictures reportedly include a bare-chested Awang brandishing an assault rifle, and another of him posing with a pistol.

The Indian Express quoted a source saying Awang was evasive in answering the questions of authorities, who decided it was too dangerous to allow him to enter India.

He was sent on a return flight back to Perth.
