The opening night of the Melbourne International Film Festival saw a dazzling array of Australian talent come together at the film premiere of Tim Winton's short story collection 'The Turning'.

Directors Warwick Thornton, Stephen Page and Jub Clerc all appeared at the red carpet debut screening of the new Bob Connelly film, which interprets 18 of Tim Winton's collection of stories about the turning points in the lives of different people.

The eagerly-awaited three hour film experimented beyond normal borders, using 18 different directors for each chapter in the book.

Directors included established and less-established figures, like actress Mia Wasikowska and Bangarra's choreographer Stephen Page, who made their directorial debuts.

It was the second time in the opening night spotlight for 'The Turning' actor Wayne Blair, who appeared at the festival last year as the director of 'The Sapphires'.
