Thousands of Australians have signed a petition calling for Prime Minister Tony Abbott to award a Sydney man killed in this week’s siege in Martin Place with the Cross of Valour.

The petition, launched this week on change.org, called for the prime minister to recognize Tori’s bravery with the Cross of Valour.

"This one man selflessly put himself in harm’s way and sacrificed himself to help the other innocent hostages escape," the petition stated.

"He deserves nothing less than our nation's respect and honour."

It has so far been signed more than 3000 times.

The Cross of Valour recognises civilian bravery and is awarded for "acts of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme peril."

Another petition to emerge in the wake of Tuesday's deadly siege has called for tougher bail laws.

That petition, which has attracted more than 80,000 signatures, stated that gunman Man Haron Monis should not have been free on bail at the time of the attack.

"After the Sydney siege, we have learnt this man was let out on bail after facing accessory to murder charges and about 40 sexual assault charges," the petition stated.

"We need stronger bail laws that would have kept this dangerous man behind bars right now."

A third petition has called for the #illridewithyou phenomenon to be adopted as a public transport advertising campaign.
