Australians celebrate survival of Indigenous culture

It’s been called Australia day, Survival Day and Invasion day: January 26 is a day of celebration for some and a day of mourning and hurt for others.

While Australia Day celebrates the arrival of Europeans 226 years ago, the day is also used as an opportunity to remember those who have walked the land for thousands of years and to celebrate indigenous culture.

Events like the Yabun festival in Sydney were held on Sunday to showcase ancient and rich Indigenous arts and culture.

People from all over New South Wales gathered in Victoria Park to enjoy the entertainment.

The festival, in its 12th year, began with respected Aboriginal elder Uncle Max Eulo cleansing the area with a smoking ceremony.

This year’s theme was "survival," encouraging the preservation of Indigenous culture.

Along with dancers and musical performances, there were stalls set up by organisations highlighting health issues and other disadvantages faced by indigenous communities.

Other events were held in capital cities across the country.

In Perth, for example, hundreds united for celebrations. Enjoying the live music and children’s rides, this year's Survival Day was one of reflection and celebration of culture but also a great day out with the family.
