Australians ditch home phones for mobiles

One-fifth of Aussies have ditched their home phone for a mobile, and the number is expected to double within five years, according to Roy Morgan research.

One in five Australians have now ditched their landline and gone mobile-only, a survey shows.

More than 20 per cent of people surveyed aged 14 or older told Roy Morgan Research they have disconnected their home phones and opted instead for a mobile.

A further third said they would consider going mobile-only.

On current trends, the number of people who solely use a mobile will double within five years, said the research company's communications manager, George Pesutto in a statement.

The researchers also found most people who ditch their landlines do so when they move house.

In the year to June, the number of movers who didn't connect a home phone surpassed the number who did for the first time on record.

Fifty-one per cent of new movers went mobile-only, up from 21 per cent in 2008.

Mobile-only customers are most likely to be young renters who generally have larger-than-average data plans.

Results for the year to June were based on responses from about 20,000 Australians.
