Thousands of Egyptian Australians have registered to vote in a landmark referendum on a new Egyptian constitution after years of political turmoil in the country.

The Egyptian Embassy in Canberra says six-thousand members of the local community have registered to cast a vote through the embassy and through consulates in Sydney and Melbourne.

The new constitution would weaken the powers of the Egyptian President and impose new rules and regulations on the army.

The chairman of the Australian Egyptian Friendship Association Safwat Elbanna told Michael Kenny, he believes the referendum is an historic moment for Egyptian democracy.
