Australia's miserably inconsistent 2016 with the bat has shone through in the end-of-year Test run-scoring figures, with no Aussie featuring in the top five for the first time since 2011.

However they weren't helped by England's jam-packed schedule, with batsmen from the old enemy occupying the top three spots after playing 17 Tests in 2016.

Steve Smith sensational summer ensured he was Australia's highest run scorer, compiling 1079 runs at an average of 71.93 and leaving him sixth in the international charts.

Smith topped last year's global tally with 1474 runs, but Englishmen Joe Root (1477), Johnny Bairstow (1470) and Alastair Cook (1270) were 2016's best.

India's Virat Kohli (1215) and Pakistani Azhar Ali (1198) were next best in fourth and fifth.

It means this year marks the first time no Australian has been in the top five in five years.

Usman Khawaja was the only other Aussie to reach the top 10 in 2016, ranked 10th with 753 runs.

Mitchell Starc was Australia's best with the ball, taking his 50th scalp for the year on Friday and lifting himself to third on the leaderboard.

He was bettered only by spinners Ravichandran Ashwin (72) of India and Sri Lanka's Rangana Herath (57).

Josh Hazlewood was the next best Aussie, finishing eighth with 42 scalps.

Australians ranked much higher in shorter-form cricket, advantaged by the fact they played 10 more one-dayers than any other nation.

Warner (1338) and Smith (1154) topped the charts, while George Bailey (808) was the fourth highest scorer.

With the ball Adam Zampa (30 wickets) and John Hastings (29) were the two most destructive, while Starc (26th) finished sixth on the leaderboard.
