Wallabies winger Drew Mitchell's World Cup hopes could be in severe jeopardy after he suffered a serious ankle injury in the New South Wales Waratahs' Super rugby clash against the Queensland Reds on Saturday.
The 27-year-old fell awkwardly after he ran into the back of Reds' loose forward Scott Higginbotham while chasing a kick in the 19th minute.
Television replays suggested he may have dislocated his right ankle. He was immediately taken off the field by stretcher.
The World Cup is being held in New Zealand from September 9 to October 23 and Mitchell was widely expected to be in Robbie Deans' Australia squad for the tournament.
