An experienced hiker from Austria has been rescued southeast of Perth after falling and hurting his leg hours into a planned four-day walk.

Police say the man became stranded at a section of the Bibbulman Track in Mount Wells on Tuesday evening after trying to walk with his injury and used his satellite phone to call for help.

He was spotted about 400m from main roads in thick bushland by the tactical flight crew aboard a police helicopter, who guided officers on the ground.

The man was checked by ambulance crew and taken back to his accommodation.
