Australian punter Cameron Johnston and his reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles have survived a thriller against the Chicago Bears to keep their pursuit of another NFL title alive.

The Eagles won 16-15 at Chicago's Soldier Field after Bears kicker Cody Parkey hit the upright to miss a potential game-winning 43-yard field goal with 10 seconds to go.

The Eagles will go on the road again to face the New Orleans Saints next weekend in the divisional round of the playoffs.

Johnston, dealing with chilly four degrees Celsius conditions, had a solid game, punting five times for an average of 45.2 yards and a long of 53 yards.

The Eagles led 10-9 early in the final quarter, but the Bears took the lead with nine minutes to go when quarterback Mitch Trubisky threw a 22-yard pass to wide-receiver Allen Robinson for a touchdown.

Philadelphia came back in the final minute when quarterback Nick Foles, after three failed attempts and with the team two yards out from the end zone, connected with a pass to receiver Golden Tate for the game-winner.

The Bears' Tarik Cohen returned the Eagles' kick off 35 yards to put the Bears in field goal range, but Parkey's attempt hit the upright and then struck the crossbar before bouncing back into the field of play.

It was a rough weekend for Australian punters with Michael Dickson's Seattle Seahawks knocked out of the playoffs on Saturday by the Dallas Cowboys, who meet the LA Rams next week.

Earlier on Sunday, the Los Angeles Chargers continued their late-season run by hanging on for a 23-17 away win against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.

The Chargers will play the New England Patriots in the divisional round next weekend and Indianapolis rounds out the next stage with a match against Kansas City.
