Aust's Moneke stars in historic NCAA win

Australian forward Chima Moneke had 18 points, including two huge early dunks, to lead the University of California Davis to an NCAA Tournament win.

Canberra's Chima Moneke has led his University of California Davis to an historic victory in the NCAA Tournament that has set up a clash with US college basketball powerhouse the University of Kansas.

Moneke, the energetic 198cm tall Australian forward, who set the tone early with two thunderous dunks, led the Aggies with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the 67-63 victory over North Carolina Central on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT) in Dayton, Ohio.

It was the first time in UC Davis' history that they have made the tournament, which features the top 68 US men's college basketball teams.

UC Davis and North Carolina Central were both given the lowest seed, 16, and the game was deemed a "play-in".

UC Davis' win elevates them into the main draw and a first-round battle on Friday (Saturday AEDT) in Tulsa, Oklahoma against number one seeds Kansas.

The Aggies, dogged by turnovers, trailed by three points at the half, but their trademark defence kept North Carolina Central scoreless for the first five minutes of the second half.

Moneke, who wears goggle-like glasses on the court, is the son of Nigerian diplomats.

He had a globe-trotting early life before settling his family settled in Canberra.
