Australian teenager Alanna Smith's dream of winning an NCAA basketball title in her first year at Stanford University is over after an upset loss to the University of Washington.

The 19-year-old power forward from Melbourne came off the bench with five points and two rebounds, but Stanford was unable to recover from a slow start and lost the quarterfinal 85-76 on Sunday.

Smith's Australian under 19 team-mate from last year's world championships, Queensland guard Kristy Wallace, remains alive in the tournament with her Baylor University squad facing Oregon State in a quarter final on Monday.
