Avalanche kills 20 in Pakistan

Police say an avalanche in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least 20 people.

An avalanche in a remote mountain village of northern Pakistan has killed at least 20 people and buried another 30 under falling snow and ice on Thursday, police said.

"The rescue team have recovered 20 dead bodies. We have reports that 30 more people have been buried," Mohammad Sadiq police official told AFP by telephone from Dasu, the main town in the area.

"The avalanche hit Kundian village and four houses. We fear that some women and children were also trapped," he said.

Dasu is about 75km from Kundian village, which is cut off with no phone or communication links, police said.
