Avalanche risk in Victorian alpine areas

Skiers and snowboarders are being warned there's a risk of avalanche in Victoria's back-country alpine areas.

An avalanche warning has been issued for some Victorian alpine areas with skiers, snowboarders and hikers put on high alert.

Significant snowfall overnight onto an existing firm base of snow resulted in a considerable risk of avalanche at 1500m and above on Tuesday and Wednesday, Emergency Management Victoria said.

"People ... skiing, snowboarding or hiking in back-country alpine areas should exercise caution and remain alert," spokesman Stephen Grant said.

"Warmer temperatures are expected tomorrow however the avalanche risk will remain, especially in high alpine environments over 1500 metres."

Mr Grant said people heading to resorts would not be impacted as the risk was not nearby.

Ski resorts are undertaking avalanche control work to minimise hazards, the authority said.

News of a possible avalanche came as the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds up to 100km/h in elevated areas above 800m across parts of the state overnight and into Wednesday.
