Azhar Ali put his name up in lights on Wednesday at the MCG.

He was also just four runs short of putting it up on the big wall at the Percy Beames Bar.

Had Pakistan let Azhar keep batting, he could have joined compatriot Sarfraz Nawaz on one of the MCG's most imposing displays.

Four black name plates hanging on a huge concrete wall dominate the bar at the back of the MCG members stand.

It honours the ground's best individual Australian and international Test performances.

Depicting the name plates from the ground's old scoreboard, there's one for Australian Arthur Mailey and his 9-121.

Another celebrates the 307 scored by compatriot Bob Cowper - the MCG's only Test triple century.

Sarfraz features with his match-winning 9-86.

The bottom name plate is for West Indian legend Sir Viv Richards, who plundered 208 in 1984.

The display has stayed unchanged since it was installed a decade ago, as part of the ground redevelopment.

On Wednesday, Azhar was 205no when Pakistan declared at 9-443.

Azhar later admitted he had no idea about coming so close to Richards's record for the MCG's highest international Test score.

"I didn't know that, but obviously Viv Richards is a big name," Azhar said.

"It would have been a great moment ... but I'm still really happy, with what I've achieved today.

"It's a really proud moment for me, for the Pakistan nation also."

Azhar batted for 577 minutes over two and a half days, faced 364 balls and hit 20 fours.

He is only the fourth international player to score an MCG Test double century and it is the third of his career.

It is also the highest Pakistan Test score in Australia, passing Majid Khan's 158 in 1972.

This is the 31-year-old's first Test tour of Australia and he came here determined to have an impact.

"It was a great moment for me - getting a double hundred at the MCG is a big occasion in my life," he said.

"Obviously coming into an Australian tour, for a sub-continental batsman, you really wish to perform really well."
