Rookie Pakistan batsman Babar Azam has defied the New Zealand bowlers but lost partners as his side tries to reach parity in Hamilton.
In just his third Test, the 22-year-old has hit a high score of 81 as the tourists reached 8-201 just as rain fell minutes before lunch at Seddon Park on Sunday, the third day of the second Test.
He and Mohammad Amir (five) are at the crease.
Babar shared partnerships of 74 with Sarfraz Ahmed (41) and 67 with Sohail Khan (37) but Pakistan are still 70 shy of the hosts' first innings total of 271.
Pakistan put on 124 runs but lost three wickets in the morning session after starting the day in deep trouble at 5-76, Babar on 34.
New Zealand weren't totally accurate in the field.
Sarfraz was on 19 when Henry Nicholls at midwicket failed to take in a pull shot.
Tom Latham could have then run out Sarfraz but missed his shy at the stumps when the batsman stumbled trying to regain his ground at the bowler's end.
Neil Wagner eventually broke the 74-run partnership when he had Sarfraz caught by Jeet Raval at second slip.
However, Sohail helped Pakistan maintain a fast scoring rate, hooking Wagner for successive sixes in one over and then successive fours in Wagner's next over.
Tim Southee ended that partnership when he had Sohail caught behind for 37 for his fourth wicket.
Colin de Grandhomme then had Wahab Riaz out lbw for a five-ball duck.
New Zealand lead the two-Test series 1-0.
