Babies thrown into water as pontoon capsizes in WA

Thirteen people, including two babies, have been rescued after a pontoon capsized in Mandurah, south of Perth.

Two babies, aged four and six months, were among 13 people who had to be rescued when a pontoon capsized south of Perth.

The group of people, aged up to 45, were on board the pontoon at the Mandurah Estuary on Thursday night when the vessel took on water and capsized.

Everyone ended up in the water and were rescued by nearby vessels, with the two infants, two teenagers and a woman taken by ambulance to the Peel Health Campus as a precaution.

Water Police and Mandurah Volunteer Marine Rescue also assisted at the scene.

The pontoon has been towed to the Mandurah marina. 

The Mandurah Estuary - twice the size of Sydney Harbour - is a popular spot for fishing and wildlife watching.

At this time of year, locals and visitors can also enjoy Christmas light displays along the canals.
