Pippa Middleton, younger sister of Britain's Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to her first child, a boy.

Ms Middleton, 35, first came to public attention when she acted as maid of honour at the 2011 wedding of her sister Kate to Prince William, who is second in line to the British throne.

A spokeswoman for Ms Middleton and her husband James Matthews said the couple's baby was a boy born on Monday.

A spokesman for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge said they were "thrilled" for Pippa and her husband.

Middleton married financier Mr Matthews last year.

The couple surprised some commentators by their appearance last Friday at Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's Windsor Castle wedding.

But despite her large baby bump she looked at ease when she joined the other guests who included Robbie Williams and Hollywood star Demi Moore.

The news follows the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's announcement they are expecting their first child.
