Baby red panda joins the family

Taronga Zoo has welcomed the newest addition to their family, a baby red panda.

He is slightly larger than a domestic cat, has reddish-brown fur, and a gorgeous little face, but unfortunately he can't be picked up and cuddled.

Born two weeks before Christmas, Taronga Zoo's youngest red panda has just started venturing out of his maternal nest box to explore the outside world.

Named Seba, the Nepalese word for reward, the panda is the 45th to be born at the Zoo since 1977.

Keeper Deborah Price said Taronga had the best breeding record in the southern hemisphere.

"So, we're really happy to welcome another little cub into the world," she said.

It is not unusual for red pandas to spend their first couple of months tucked up inside nest boxes before visitors get a glimpse of them, but Seba isn't necessarily a timid, retiring type.

"He lives up to the fiery reputation of redheads. He has attitude and can be very stand-offish with us," Ms Price said.

"This is a fantastic reaction because Seba is acting just like a wild Red Panda cub would."

Red pandas are listed as a vulnerable species, with less than 10,000 mature individuals existing in the wild.

The species live across the Himalayan mountains and foothills of northern India, China, Nepal, India and Bhutan.

They are threatened due to illegal hunting and deforestation of their natural habitat.
