Baby's death sparks support group call

The stabbing death of a baby in Brisbane's south has prompted a local church to form a support group for Chinese grandparents.

The pastor of a Brisbane church attended by a man suspected of killing his granddaughter plans to start a support group for Chinese grandparents.

Robert Chua heads New Hope Community Church at Calamvale, near the Parkinson home where 11-week-old Qianqian "Queenie" Xu was fatally wounded on Wednesday.

Her mother and grandmother were also seriously injured in the alleged attack, while the girl's 53-year-old grandfather has been arrested and is under police guard in hospital.

Although it's still unknown exactly what led to the stabbings, Mr Chua is planning to form a support group for Chinese grandparents visiting family in Brisbane.

"We want to be a bit more proactive now - this Sunday I'm talking to our leadership team," he told AAP.

He said many grandparents came to Australia temporarily from China to support their families.

There were concerns they could feel cut off because of the language barrier and the fact some could not drive in Australia.

Mr Chua met Queenie's grandfather last Sunday when he attended a church service with the girl.

"He was very normal, very loving," Mr Chua said on Thursday night at a candlelight vigil for Queenie in Parkinson.

"He was carrying the little baby and smiling and walking around."

Some at the vigil, attended by more than 200, were from the Chinese community and also expressed concern for grandparents who came to Australia to help with childcare.

Police have said Queenie's grandparents were visiting from China to help look after their granddaughter while her 28-year-old mother, Yuanyuan Cao, prepared to return to her job at a bank.

Mr Chua plans to meet Ms Cao and Queenie's father, George Xu, in hospital on Friday.
