Backman could help AFL Eagles go forward

West Coast will lock up second spot and two home finals if they can beat Brisbane at the Gabba on Sunday.

A defender playing in attack could hold the key to West Coast's top-two hopes.

The Eagles will lock up second spot and two home finals with a win over Brisbane at the Gabba on Sunday, but a loss could see them tumble to fourth.

A top-two berth is considered vital in West Coast's premiership bid, given it would allow them the possibility of not having to travel again until the AFL grand final.

But the Eagles will have to cope yet again without two-time Coleman medallist Josh Kennedy, who will miss his fifth straight match with a shin injury.

Jack Darling has been cleared to play after recovering from concussion, but it still leaves West Coast lacking tall marking options in attack.

Defender Will Schofield returns to the side after recovering from a hamstring injury, while swingman Oscar Allen has been called up for just his second AFL match.

Their inclusions will free up either Jeremy McGovern or Tom Barrass to play in attack.

Both have spent stints up forward this year, but with only limited success.

McGovern's finest moment came when he kicked the winning goal after the siren in the round 21 triumph over Port Adelaide.

The 1.93m Allen is another option the Eagles could play in attack, given he played a bulk of his junior career as a key forward.

Back-up ruckman Nathan Vardy is also set to spend extended periods in attack as West Coast attempt to find a mix capable of kicking a winning score.

Although Brisbane have won only five games this year, they have the potential to match it with the top sides.

The Lions have beaten Hawthorn twice this season, and they came close to knocking off Collingwood, Port Adelaide, Adelaide, and North Melbourne.

Brisbane made just one change, replacing the injured Alex Witherden with Oscar McInerney.

Eagles defender Lewis Jetta has been forced out with another calf injury, while Brendon Ah Chee was dropped.
