Backpackers evacuated from Sydney fire

About 100 people were forced from their beds and a restaurant in Sydney's eastern suburbs because of a fire in a restaurant's kitchen.

A fire in a kitchen exhaust fan has forced the midnight evacuation of backpackers and diners in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

Police say more than 100 people were evacuated from a building in Coogee at 12:05am (AEDT) on Sunday.

It is believed a fire ignited within an exhaust fan in the kitchen of a restaurant in the building on Arden Street.

Police evacuated about 80 people from backpacker accommodation in the building and 40 customers from the restaurant downstairs.

A sprinkler system extinguished the fire.

Guests were allowed back into their rooms at 2am (AEDT).

No one was injured.
