Bagnato family call sentence 'ridiculous'

The family of convicted murderer Antonio Bagnato have called his death sentence "ridiculous" after the Thai court ruling on Tuesday.

Family members have labelled Antonio Bagnato's death sentence as "ridiculous" after a Thai court made its ruling on the 28-year-old Sydney man.

Bagnato was found guilty of the murder of former Sydney underworld figure and Hells Angels bikie, Wayne Schneider in 2015.

He received his sentence before a judge in Pattaya Criminal Court on Tuesday, appearing in ankle chains and handcuffs.

Thailand rarely carries out the death penalty and Bagnato's family wept in court as the lengthy terms of punishment for the kidnapping, assault and pre-mediated murder were announced.

"We've got hearts and they're hurting right now," said a brother of Bagnato's who did not wish to be further identified, outside the hearing.

Other family members called the sentence "ridiculous".

Bagnato and 22-year-old American Tyler Gerard were arrested days after Schneider's naked body was found in a shallow, sandy grave in Chonburi, about 30km from his luxury villa in Pattaya.

It's uncertain whether Bagnato's lawyers will lodge an appeal.
