Bail for WA man accused of AFL assault

A Fremantle fan accused of striking a woman during an AFL preliminary final has been granted bail and will be back in court in a fortnight.

A Dockers fan who allegedly hit a woman in the throat after being asked to tone down his language at an AFL match has had one charge upgraded but has been granted bail.

Cody Yarran, 24, is accused of striking the mother in front of her children during Fremantle's preliminary final loss to Hawthorn at Domain Stadium on September 25.

Yarran appeared in Perth Magistrates Court on Monday via video link from Hakea prison where a charge was upgraded from common assault to aggravated common assault because children were present.

He also faces charges of disorderly behaviour in a public place, breach of bail and two counts of obstructing a public officer.

The police prosecutor said Yarran's actions were not a victimless crime and argued he was a danger to the community.

But Yarran's lawyer said his client's behaviour had improved in the past few years.

Yarran was granted bail with a personal undertaking of $2000 and a surety of $2000.

He is due back in court on October 19.
