Bailey at loss to explain Shield woes

Tasmania remain last on the Sheffield Shield ladder after a thumping defeat by Western Australia and captain George Bailey doesn't know the way forward.

When it comes to finding a way forward for Tasmania's Sheffield Shield side, skipper George Bailey is stumped.

Reeling from a humiliating nine-wicket home ground loss to Western Australia on Sunday, the experienced international player struggled to analyse the form that keeps the Tigers at the bottom of the ladder.

"Just disappointing I reckon," Bailey told reporters after the match wrapped up more than a day early at Bellerive Oval.

"You look at that scorecard and you look at that game, and if there is (any analysis) it's probably nothing that hasn't been said before.

"We all are scratching our heads a little bit."

The Tigers' batsmen were routed for 198 and 265 across two innings, as the top order repeatedly failed, the side making starts of 2-2 and 2-12.

Only an admirable 75 from No.9 batsman Simon Milenko on Sunday forced Western Australia to bat a second time.

While Bailey noted Milenko's successful game plan, he said that overall there was very little positivity from Tasmania.

"There's a good break between now and the next game so perhaps not a bad time for individuals and the group to take stock and find a way to get better," he said.

While Australian T20 squad member Tim Paine made a century in second-XI cricket at the weekend, Bailey said a recall to the Tasmanian squad was out of his hands.

"I'm not a selector," he said. "From my point of view as the captain I just want us to pick the best players."

Tasmania next take on NSW at Wollongong in a match starting February 25.
