Baird's gas pledge for low-income families

Low-income families in NSW would have their gas bills cut under a Baird government plan to extend the existing energy rebate scheme.

A re-elected coalition government would extend the energy rebate scheme to include gas bills, the NSW premier has promised.

Mike Baird said the proposal means the NSW Liberals and Nationals would provide more than a billion dollars to assist households with their energy costs over the next four years.

The plan includes a new $90 gas rebate for 290,000 low-income families, and almost double the value of the Life Support Rebate to help the estimated 32,000 people who rely on life-support equipment.

"My government is committed to assisting families with the cost of electricity and gas," Mr Baird said.

"Under this plan, more funding will be available to a greater number of households, meaning less money spent on energy and more going back into people's pockets.
