The father of the teenager caught buying marijuana in Bali has spoken out for the first time, insisting his son is "genuinely sorry and remorseful" for the trouble he has caused.

The 14-year-old Australian boy's father emerged from behind the hessian sheets that surround their home today to make a media statement.

News Limited says the father spoke publicly in the hope it would reduce intense media interest surrounding his son and allow the family to return to normal life.

He's told reporters the family wants people to know his son is genuinely sorry and remorseful for his decisions and actions in Bali.

He says the family did not know about their son's drug use before going on holidays.

The teenager was last week sentenced to two months in prison after being convicted on one count of drug use following his arrest with 3.6 grams of marijuana in October.

Reports that Channel Nine had signed an exclusive deal with the family to tell the boy's story have repeatedly resurfaced - something which the family and the TV Network have both vehemently denied.
