Bali protesters picket Aust man's trial

Protesters have picketed outside a Denpasar court where an Austrlaian man is on trial over child abuse charges.

Protesters have turned up at the court in Bali where Australian national Robert Andrew Fiddes Ellis is on trial for sexual abuse charges.

About seven people, reportedly members of a local NGO, stood outside the Denpasar District Court, holding banners and shouting slogans calling for the death penalty for Ellis and protection for local children, an epa journalist reports.

One wide banner, held up by three people, read "Save Bali children from pedophile" in English and Indonesian, while another one read, "Pedophile offenders should be castrated or die" in Indonesian.

Today's trial session consisted of evidence from several witnesses.

When the Australian suspect arrived at the court, he appeared calm and spoke only to his lawyer and interpreter.

Ellis, 69, who is being detained in Kerobokan Prison, is accused of sexually abusing 16 girls between the ages of 8 and 17 over a period of two years in Bali.
