Ballina beaches reopen after shark attack

Three beaches have been reopened more than 24 hours after a surfer was attacked by a shark at Ballina on the NSW north coast.

Beaches in NSW's most notorious shark hot spot have reopened more than 24 hours after a man was bitten by a shark.

Seneca Rus, 25, was bitten by a suspected white pointer on Wednesday at Sharpes Beach in Ballina while he was surfing with his mates.

Lifesavers made the decision to re-open Sharpes, Shelly and Lighthouse beaches after completing roving patrols on the coastline at noon.

The beaches will be monitored for shark activity.

The attack on Mr Rus prompted Premier Mike Baird to reverse his previous opposition to nets and instead ask the federal government for a six-month trial.

It was the second attack in less than two weeks in the area and came after Cooper Allan, 17, sustained deep leg wounds after being mauled by a great white at Ballina's Lighthouse Beach in late September.

It was also the sixth shark attack in the area since January last year, including one that killed Japanese surfer Tadashi Nakahara.

"This shark problem that we've had for the last 18 months is something that hasn't happened before," Ballina Mayor David Wright said.
