Ban smoke around food, drink: Quit Vic

Quit Victoria says the state's upcoming outdoor dining smoking ban should also include drinking areas.

Victoria's upcoming outdoor dining smoking ban should also encompass drinking areas, the state's anti-smoking body says.

The state government last year announced a ban from August 2017 that will cover all outdoor dining areas at restaurants, cafes, take-away shops and licensed premises.

But Quit Victoria director Sarah White says the ban should also include outdoor drinking spaces, similar to the model in Queensland where smokers are assigned a designated area.

"Victorians expect to be able to socialise outside without being subjected to second hand smoke, irrespective of whether they are having a sandwich or a coffee," Dr White said on Sunday.

She said laws that banned smoking only in outdoor dining areas could cause confusion and enforcement problems.

Premier Daniel Andrews said an ongoing consultation process was underway.

"We aim to get a common sense outcome," he told reporters.
