Bandit robs adult shop near Shorten

An armed bandit robbed an adult store about 100 metres from a Perth medical centre where Opposition Leader Bill Shorten was campaigning.

It says a lot about Bill Shorten's second day campaigning in suburban Perth that the armed robbery of an adult shop provided the most newsworthy event.

The robbery took place about 100 metres from where the Labor leader was visiting a medical clinic.

There his only pledge of the day was to enshrine in law public ownership of Medicare.

Mr Shorten was holding a press conference in the new West Australian seat of Burt, alongside Labor's candidate Matt Keogh, when the robbery took place.

The offender fled the scene with an unknown amount of cash.

Mr Shorten had no cash to splash as he made his fourth visit to a doctor's surgery since the campaign fully began on May 9.

There he met mother-of-four Chontelle Sands - a member of the ALP - and her children Mason, 3, and Amelia,2, who live in the neighbouring seat of Fremantle.

Amelia was being treated for a cough by Dr Ameer Khan.

One woman not there was an upset Michelle Lyndon who claimed federal police officers barred her from entering the medical clinic to say hello to Mr Shorten.

However, her non-indigenous friend David Stacey was allowed entry.

"I don't know whether it's got to do with my race," Ms Lyndon told AAP.

"I felt intimidated."

Mr Shorten spent some time in Burt, regarded as a notional Liberal seat but one which Labor believes it can add to its paltry total of three in WA.

To make matters worse, its three sitting MPs are not seeking re-election on July 2.

Mr Keogh is having a second run for parliament in less than a year, having unsuccessfully run in the neighbouring seat of Canning following the death of Liberal MP Don Randall.

Education, health, jobs and support for small business were among the issues raised at a town hall meeting Mr Shorten attended on Monday night.

His campaign moves to Melbourne later on Tuesday.
