At least 14 workers have been killed and scores injured after a boiler exploded at a packaging factory near the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka, firefighters say.

The Saturday morning explosion at the Tampaco Foils factory caused the partial collapse of the building and a fire, said Mohammad Rafiquzzaman of the Fire Service and Civil Defence Department.

He said firefighters had recovered the bodies of 14 people from inside the factory building in Tongi industrial district, 20 kilometres north of Dhaka.

The death toll may rise further as firefighters were still trying to douse the flames, police officer Harun-ar-Rashid said.

The Tampoco Foils factory produces packets for tobacco and other consumer products.
