Interim Carlton coach John Barker says his first task at the helm will be to inject much-needed spirit and energy back into the playing group.
Mick Malthouse was sacked as coach of the bottom-placed Blues on Tuesday after a huge public falling-out with the board and executive.
Barker's first match in charge is a daunting away AFL clash against Sydney at the SCG on Friday night.
"We know that there have been some issues with our effort and we know it's one of the core components of footy," Barker said on Thursday.
"It's really just to drive some spirit and some energy back into the place."
