Former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce will be up against 16 other candidates in the New England by-election.

The Australian Electoral Commission on Friday declared 17 candidates will stand in the by-election, triggered by Mr Joyce's resignation after he was disqualified by the High Court over his dual citizenship.

The former deputy prime minister won the seat with 58.5 per cent of the two-party preferred vote in 2016 against nine other candidates.

Mr Joyce drew seventh position on the ballot paper, with Richard Stretton from the Christian Democratic Party getting the number one spot and Labor's David Ewings in 12th place.

Among the candidates is the colourfully named Meow-Ludo Disco Gamma Meow-Meow, from the Science Party.
