Professor Barry Spurr has resigned from his position at the University of Sydney, the university announced.

The poetry professor was suspended in October over racist emails.

The emails, leaked by the website New Matilda, reportedly referred to Prime Minister Tony Abbott as an "Abo lover" and former South African president Nelson Mandela as a "darkie", as well as lashing out at "Mussies" and "chinky-poos".

The university launched an investigation into the matter.

On Thursday, the university announced Professor Spurr had tendered his resignation, which was accepted.

"At Professor Spurr's request, the university will provide no further comment on this matter," it said in a statement.

Earlier in the year Professor Spurr defended the emails as a "whimsical" game and told New Matilda they were only sent to one person.

Professor Spurr advised the federal government's independent review of the national curriculum.

Spurr took New Matilda to court in a bid to stop the further publication of emails. New Matilda said they wouldn't publish any more emails under a settlement reached between Spurr and the website.
