Basel punished for Europa fan violence

Swiss football club FC Basel have been punished for the violent behaviour of their fans during last week's Europa League clash with Salzburg.

Swiss club FC Basel must play their Europa League quarter-final first leg clash against Valencia behind closed doors after being punished for the violent behaviour of their fans.

UEFA also fined FC Basel 107,000 euros ($A163,000) after objects, including cigarette lighters, were thrown on to the pitch in their last-16 clash against Salzburg last week with the referee halting the game for 10 minutes.

A second one-match stadium ban was suspended for two years, UEFA said.

Basel and Valencia meet on April 3.
