Australian basketballer Tom Wilson hasn't settled on a starting point for his AFL career after closing the door on his hoops dreams.
Six weeks after making his debut for the Boomers, the 21-year-old Victorian was granted an immediate release from his NBL contract with the Sydney Kings on Tuesday as he attempts to make the switch.
Collingwood, Geelong and Gold Coast have been linked as suitors for Wilson, who is expected to sign a multi-year deal as a Category B rookie this off-season.
Category B contracts fall outside the salary cap, with Adelaide's Hugh Greenwood (basketball), Collingwood's Mason Cox (basketball) and Geelong's Mark Blicavs (athletics) using the pathway to senior lists.
Wilson has signed with high-profile AFL player agent Robbie D'Orazio, who counts Dylan Shiel, Andrew Gaff and Jake Stringer as clients, to manage the transition.
The former under-17 and under-19 Australian basketball skipper alluded to having ongoing discussions with multiple clubs but plans to mull over his destination options in coming weeks.
"I'll sit down with Robbie and my family and go through the options. As far as a destination, we haven't decided yet," he told SEN.
Wilson believes he still has time to carve out a decent AFL career and hopes to get up to speed with a stint in the VFL or state league equivalent before officially joining his new club full-time in November.
"I can really become a pretty good AFL player one day," he said.
"I obviously haven't played for a long time so there's going to be a lot of learning that's going to go on in the next few months."
Wilson played junior football with Vic Metro at the 2013 AFL Under-16 Championships and was recruited by the Sandringham Dragons.
Some AFL scouts rated the 194cm Victorian as a top-30 draft prospect before he gave the sport away to focus on basketball.
Crows defender Greenwood and ex-Port Adelaide and GWS ruckman Dean Brogan are other former NBL-listed players to fashion AFL careers.
Melbourne United's Craig Moller has gone in the opposite direction, debuting for the Boomers last year after spending three seasons with Fremantle from 2013 to 2015.
